Developing Essay/Exam Writing Skills is vital for examination success. Useful textbooks are: 'How to write better essays' by Bryan Greetham. Or, an easier textbook, 'The Basics of Essay Writing' by Nigel Warburton. A valuable study skills textbook is 'The Buzan Study Skills Handbook' by Tony Buzan.

AS Law course textbooks:

You need to purchase for the first week of term:
'OCR Law for AS' by Jacqueline Martin [Hodder Education 2008].

A useful revision guide is 'The English Legal System Course Companion and Revision Guide: AS Level Law' by Jo Smillie. An excellent useful additional textbook (little more advanced) is AS Law for OCR by Elliott & Quinn.

An alternative to a textbook is the DVD
AS Law Revision (a couple of students could buy this at £13.99 per copy and pass between them or watch together - this DVD may also be in the College Library).

For further information on AS Law additional textbooks see your Laws Lecturer/Teacher and/or the Department of Laws Book Advice pages.

A2 - Criminal Law course textbooks:

The 'OCR Criminal Law for A2' book is needed for the first lesson of term.
'OCR Criminal Law for A2' by Jacqueline Martin et al [Hodder Education 2009]. Highly recommended is 'Criminal Law' 2009-10 by Norman Baird, since this gives example Question and Answers - with useful 'Think points'.

An alternative book - which is used in class - is 'Criminal Law'  by Diana Roe [Hodder Arnold 2005 - 3rd edition]. If you are aiming for an A-grade then an excellent textbook is 'Unlocking Criminal Law' by Jacqueline Martin and Tony Storey (Hodder Arnold 2007 - 2nd edition). If you want help/advice on answering essay homework, and preparing for examination questions, see
'Criminal Law Q & A' by Norman Baird. An alternative textbook is 'Criminal Law Questions and Answers' by Molan and Douglas.

A useful revision book for G143 is 'A2 Law -- Criminal Law Exam Revision Notes' by Emma Bradbury and Caroline Rowlands (Philip Allan Updates).

For further information on A2 Law textbooks (including differentiation suggestions) see your Laws Lecturer/Teacher and/or the Department of Laws Book Advice pages.

AS Citizenship Studies.
We have been waiting for years for the promised book 'AS Citizenship Studies for AQA' by Mike Mitchell and Tim Holden-Rowley (Hodder Education - latest update on availability is the 30th October 2009).

Given the delay in the publication of the above book, we are urging students to buy the textbook: AQA AS Citizenship by Duncan Watts at a cost of £16.19 delivered free. Another valuable text is 'Citizenship and Participation' by Lisa Firth at a cost of just £7.45p.

A useful alternative book is 'AS Citizenship' by Holden-Rowley and Blewitt (Hodder & Stoughton). [We have a limited number of used 'AS Citizenship' textbooks which can be loaned (first come first served).]
Buying Citizenship textbooks can be problematic because most of the published books are not relevant to the exam syllabus. Ask your Laws Lecturer/Teacher for for advice
.

A2 Citizenship Studies.
There is a problem with recommending a textbook for A2 Citizenship Studies, because non currently exists (there are reports of Mitchell and Holden-Rowley providing a book - but we cannot confirm dates etc). So, we will be using a variety of textbooks to cover the many subject areas. Obviously, students may wish to buy their own - but this could mean buying at least four textbooks. To prevent the need for this, we will be establishing a 'limited loan library' within the Department of Laws. See Mr Bunce for details.

................................

If a student is unable to buy a new course textbook there is a possibility that we may be able to help. For example, we may have some old, damaged, and/or dated (or similar), textbooks which can be loaned
(this is not generally recommended, since used textbooks may be earlier editions and information may be dated. Also, the Laws intranet materials generally refer to pages and materials in the current editions of textbooks and not previous ones) - see Dr Jepson.
